Dealing with chronic illnesses involves a tremendous amount of loss. The most significant is the loss of health, but that loss leads to other losses: energy level, job and financial security, social activities, and so many others. It’s not uncommon for depression and anxiety to set in when our physical health is failing, especially when we’re not able to participate in life the way we once were.
Through goal setting, identifying self-care practices, improving self-advocacy, setting up safety plans, and learning some relaxation and mindfulness techniques, we can tackle some of the more difficult aspects of coping with chronic illness. I know it’s hard to believe that living with an illness can feel manageable, but it can and by using these tools, I found a way for my illness to not define my life. We can do that for you, too.
